Lawrence Weiner’s edition amplifies the notions of creativity, language, and art. A culinary experience can serve as the starting point for conversations about the human experience.
There are hundreds of varieties of corn, if not thousands. The heart and soul of Mexican cuisine is corn. Corn used to happen in the backyards of people’s houses, and it was not a monoculture, it was part of a farming system called milpa. Milpa was a pre-hispanic system that was developed to grow corn. There’s a system of plants that coexist and work together, where the corn will draw nitrogen from the soil and the beans will put it back. In this way, there is no waste and everything gets utilized. Milpa is a gift from the earth.
